DOCKERS’ BOYCOTT
Ford’s plea rejected
IN Z PA -Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, August 27, America’s leading trade unionist, Mr George Meany, has rejected a plea bv President Ford to call off the watefsiders’ boycott on grain shipments to the Soviet Union, and says that the ban will continue.
Mr Meany, who is president of the A.F.L.-C.1.0. trade union confederation, had a 90-minute meeting yesterday afternoon with Mr Ford, having earlier had, with other union leaders, two hours of talks with the Secretary for Labour (Mr John Dunlop).
Maritime union leaders, with Mr Meany’s support have halted the loading of the 9.8 million tonnes of grain bought by the Soviet Union until the Administration gives assurances that the grain sales will not give rise to a new round of inflation in America. The White House says that there will be further meetings between the Administration and the union leaders in an attempt to resolve the dispute.
