Libyan coup bid report
(N.Z P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) BEIRUT.
A leading Libyan politician is quoted by a Beirut magazine as saying that a fellowmember of the Revolutionary Command Council had attempted a coup d’etat against the Head of State (Colonel Gadaffi) before fleeing from the country.
This is the first Libyan reference to reports of a coup bid in Libya and of the flight of Maior Omar Abdullah Meheishi to Tunisia. Colonel Abu Bakr Younis told the pro-Libya weekly magazine. “Al-Massa,” that Major Meheishi had begun recruiting officers in his area with the aim of a coup d’etat.
Major Meheishi had recruited some officers among his relatives and had the backing of some students who had been studying Marxism, Colonel Younis said.
