Farmers’ interest
The chairman of a committee of South Island provinces of Federated Fanners (Mr J. G. Humm), said last night that if the merger was to proceed, they would expect the two companies to honour the undertaking that they had given to the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries (Mr Moyle). That undertaking was
they would agree to the sale to producer interests of Islington, or Bumside, or Imlay works, with an arbitrator setting the price.
There had also been an undertaking to consider the sale of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company’s shareholding in N.C.F. Kaiapoi, Ltd, subject to the agreement of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company.
These were the grounds on
which they considered that Mr Moyle had given approval to the merger.
Mr Humm said that the producers would expect the two companies to meet the Meat Board for discussions to this end. “If this is done it will achieve our objective—to obtain producer control of some portion of the South Island processing industry,” he said.
