Only 128 horses up to Stud Book times

During the 1974-75 season only 103 pacers and 25 trotters recorded winning mile rates of placed performances over one mile which reached the guidelines for times suggested by the Standardbred Breeders’ Association for entry to the New Zealand Trotting Stud Book.

With so much mobile start racing on tracks which proside such fast surfaces, it is surprising that the numbers are so small.

Winning mile rates of 2.8 from a standing start or 2.5 from a mobile start for pacers, and 2.10 for trotters are the criteria.

During the season, 146 stallions sired winners or placegetters, with only 58 of those horses being credited with performers recording times within the present criteria.

Of those 58 stallions with acceptable time performers to their credit, only 17 had three or more.

The list is headed by Scottish Hanover which had seven time performers — Final Curtain, Metro Carol, Palestine, Scottish Chat, Drum Major, Hanover Bay and La Roue.

Local Light, Majestic Chance and Johnny Globe each had six on the list.

Local Light’s representatives were Captain Harcourt, Local Routine, Noble Escort, Pay Off, Rosewood Light and Game Lad. Local Light had 30 individual winners during the season, three fewer than Scottish Hanover, while Majestic Chance had 19. Majestic Chance’s best time performers were Parlez Vous, Bayi, Czarina Star, Lunar Chance, Kawarau Gold and Mister Mark. Johnny Globe had two pacers and four trotters on the list. They were Eclipse, Globe Fighter, Cee Ar, Glenrowan, Indira and Jillinda. Johnny Globe had 18 individual winners during the season. Five of the 17 winners sired by Armbro Hurricane appear on the list. They were Direct Magic, Jascoe, Armbro Magic, Hurrania and Hurricane Star. Young . Charles, which topped the sires’ list for the season, also had five of his 15 winners on the time list. As well as Young Quinn (1.57), he sired Glen Patch, Montana Gold, Young Al

and Young Kenny, all of which met the time requirements. Four each Armbro Del (Deeside, Dunhoe, Alias Armbro, Armbro Lady), arrisdn Hanover (Main Adios, David Garrison, Hakim, Speedy Guest), Goodland (Brenda Bell, Good Admiral, Priority, Topeka), Honest Master (Hallmaster, Master Dean, Master Terry, Ruling Credit), Lordship (Tricky Dick, Koarakau, Living Doll, Micron), all finished with four on the list.

One of the more significant features of the sires with four on the list was the success of Sly Yankee, which had only two and three-year-olds racing. His best time performers were Nandina Wisdom, Forto Prontezza, Hill High and Surete.

Goodland shared with Johnny Globe the honours of having four trotters on the list. They each had ope more than Great Evander, which was the most successful sire of stake-winning trotters for the season. Great Evander was the sire of. Easton Light, Do Enquire and Flagon Wagon.

Fallacy (Ganya, Gay Tenness e e , Kotare Legend), Hi Lo’s Forbes (Glen Forbes, Hi Foyle, Darky Forbes), Lumber Dream (Robalan, Josias, Dream Away) and Tuft (Mighty Tufty, Scottish Chief, Edis Nova) all had three on the list. * Those with two runners to meet the time requirements were Bachelor Hanover, Eagle Armbro, Emory Hanover, Holy Hal, Jurist, Out to Win, Rodney Day, Tempest Hanover, Truant’ Hanover, Van Dieman, Van Hanover, Waitaki Hanover and Yankee Express.

When it is considered that there was a record 1598 races run during the season, the number of winners to meet the time requirements was small, particularly when it is considered also that the mobile barrier was used for so many races.
