Mr Hunt acting Speaker
(N.Z. Press Association I WELLINTON, August 26. The Chairman of Committees, Mr J. L. Hunt (Labour, New Lynn) took over as acting Speaker when the House of Representatives resumed today. The House expressed its sympathy at the illness of the Speaker, Mr S. A. Whitehead (Labour, Nelson) and was told by the Prime Minister (Mr Rowling) that Mr Whitehead could be away from Parliament for five or six weeks. Mr Rowling said that Mr Whitehead’s doctors were satisfied with his progress at the Nelson Hospital. The Speaker was admitted to the hospital last week-end for what ’ was at first! thought to be a digestive illness but which turned out to' be a mild heart attack. The Leader of the Opposi-. tion (Mr Muldoon), wished! Mr Whitehead a full, and! speedy recovery. The House endorsed the. appointment of Mr R. M. Barclay (Labour, New Plymouth) as the acting Chairman of Committees, and Mr T. J. Young (Labour, Hutt) as the deputy acting Chairman of Committees.
Mr Barclay is the Senior Government Whip and Mr Young the Junior Government Whip.
