Stunning dead
WZ. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Stunning, a leading New Zealand thoroughbred sire, at Ra Ora Stud, East Tamaki, for the last seven years, died yesterday. He was 20 years old.
After standing at stud in Wairarapa, Stunning was bought for Ra Ora by a syndicate headed by the late proprietor of the stud. Sir Woolf Fisher.
In his first season at Ra Ora, Stunning sired the South African champion. Sledgehammer. His earlier progeny included Daryl's Joy, a big winner in New Zealand, Australia and the United States.
The Australian stayer. Haymaker (an A.R.C. Easter Handicap winner), Kia Marea, and Red Chips and An Illusion were others that he sired. A chestnut, Stunning was bred in England, by Stardust from Running Wild, and imported to New Zealand in 1961. His death follows closely those of Oncidium, Hermes and Gold Sovereign and leaves a big gap at Ra Ora. He had a full book of mares for this season, including such good ones as Beatnik, Proud Hagen and Second Chance.
