Ferry Road cottages

Sir, — Ferry Road is an extremely busy and noisy thoroughfare which I, a. young, reasonably alert person. at times find almost impossible to cross. Yet only aj few yards from the Moorhouse Avenue intersection the City Council sees fit to build pensioners' cottages. Some elderly people will be pleased, at first, to be placed in these buildings. Too many of our elderly people are made to feel they have outlived their usefulness and .should be grateful for any crumbs the affluent middleclass deigns to toss to them Who was responsible for the .siting of these cottages?: How many pensioners were involved in the design and location; how many were I taken to the site for com-: intents before it was pur-|

chased? When were tenants ■of council-owned cottages I last interviewed for information regarding their needs? — Yours, etc., W. R. ALSTON. i August 12, 1975. [The Town Clerk (Mr J. H. 'Gray), replies: “The development of any housing for the (elderly site is considered by 'the council in detail | before a final decision lis . made to develop. In every case the site is first referred to the Housing Cor :poration and to the Depart|ment of Health for comment (as to its suitability. Favourable comments were received from both departments on the site at 263 Ferry Road. The land is zoned Residential 3 and is close to all the amenities desirable for elderly people, including main bus routes, shopping areas, churches, etc. The question of elderly tenants crossing Ferry Road is of concern, but it will be appreciated that it is virtually impossible for every requirement to be met fully; the traffic lights at the intersection of Moorhouse Avenue and Ferry Road are only a short distance from the development. Design of housing for the elderly units is constantly under review and if your correspondent has any suggestions, he is invited to submit them for consideration.”]
