Aust. nuclear bomb ‘stopped’

Research on the concentrated enrichment of uranium, which would have given Australia the capability of building nuclear weapons, was halted by the Labour Government after it won office in 1972, the “Sydney Morning Herald” reported today. A front-page story by lan Frykberg said a key process in uranium enrichment was developed by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission with the knowledge of the then Liberal-Country Party coalition Government. The Government had not approved the manufacture of nuclear weapons, which defence officials had planned! to manufacture for the; Royal Australian Air Force' and Navy, the report said. Death at controls A Mexican airline pilot died of a heart attack while flying 25 passengers from Mexico City to the Yucatan Peninsula, but his co-pilot made a safe emergency landing. The co-pilot set the Aeromexico plane down at Vera Cruz. — Mexico City.
