Copy-cat theft nets no cash
CN.Z Press Assn—Copyright) SYDNEY, August 8. Sydney police believe a gang of amateurs copying the Lithgow train robbers were responsible for the fruitless mail haul from a south coast passenger train ! yesterday. They said yesterday’s robi bers risked a major rail disaster by putting sleepers across the tracks in the path of the Nowra Train. In the robbery, the thieves escaped with four mail-bags which police said today contained no money. Police said one of the gang had made sure the train was travelling slowly when it hit the sleepers near Coledale by pulling the emergency cord at 6.65 p.m. They said many lives could have been lost if the train had hit the sleepers at its normal speed of 80 km/h.
