Social services
'■ Sir, —As a New Zealander 1 who has lived in America for ' many years and always boasted about our social services, I have received three . doctors’ bills , . . one almost as high, and two higher ($5 and $9) than I customarily paid in New York City without subsidisation. The lowest bill, was from the mosG qualified man who mentioned jthat he considered services (in a private hospital akin to j chartering a plane (rather than taking a scheduled flight) in order to “choose” a particular pilot. Surely that illustrates the speciousness of the “free choice” arguments. Unlike a scheduled airline passenger anyone would prefer to elect his .own surgeon, avoid waiting and save several needless days in hospital. It is not a “free! ; choice”, but an economic; choice, purely a matter ofj 'being able to afford one’s; preference, and hardly a (commendable “social service”. I am grateful there! lis a movement for change. —Yours, etc.. AMERICAN N.Z.'er. . July 23. 1975.
