Election broadsheet

Sir, — R. J. Gale completely misunderstands my objections to the broadsheet. The friends of any candidate are perfectly free to ask anybody to support him. Organisations such as the F.0.L., Federated Farmers or the Landlords Association are free to endorse candidates and parties if a majority of their members so wish. But what the National candidate’s friends did on his behalf was to ask lawyers to use their confidential and privileged relationship with clients to influence their clients to support Mr Quigley, on the grounds that it would be in the interests of lawyers. The implication is quite clear that the “interests” are financial. The Law Society’s description of the broadsheet as "indiscreet” and “foolish” is a sober judgment. Mr Quigley’s television comments that he approved of its contents are a damning indictment and should leave Rangiora electors in no doubt at all as to his worth as a candidate. — Yours, etc., KERRY BURKE. M.P. for Rangiora. June 18, 1975.
