The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra
Sir,—“Double Counterpoint” and “’Not Twisted” show an astonishing ignorance of the history and raison
d’etre of the Christchurch I Symphony Orchestra. Its! origins lay in the need for: an orchestra to support the' local choirs and arts festivals.i Indeed for several years ill was Arts Council policy to' support the .work of the! Christchurch choirs through a grant to the orchestra, and at; one time the orchestra had to provide some free rehearsals because of this. Anyway the orchestra certainly could not flourish without the additional work provided by the “users.” The foundation still has to pay the full-time and retainer players whether the orchestra has concerts or not and by my calculations the i “users” contributed well over :$2OOO for the services of these ■players last year — rather imore than “not one cent.”: Perhaps the validity of your I correspondent’s . arguments: lean best be judged by their; I reluctance to reveal their: names.—Yours, etc.. PETER D. BARTON April 9, 1975.
