DEATH OF U.S. SERVICEMAN
The death occurred tn Christchurch on Wednesday of Lieutenant-Commander H. D. Swinford, the public works officer with the United States Navy Antarctic support force base at Christchurch for the last three years. Commander Swinford wasi the Navy’s primary liaison with civil contracting firms for the maintenance and repair of millions of dollars: worth of equipment involved. in the Antarctic programme. ; He entered the United' States Navy in June, 1947. as an enlisted man and was commissioned in 1964. For much of his career Commander Swinford's work was in nuclear power. He spent two seasons at the nuclear power plant which used to be on Observation Hill overlooking McMurdo Station. Commander Swinford was a member of the Riccarton Rotary Club and tile Model A Ford Clqj?.
His body will be flown ro the United States to his home town of Salem. Oregon, aboard a United Slates Military Airlift Command Starlifter early this morning. Commander Swinford’s family will follow later in the month.
