Pit Stops
When the Swedish driver Ove Andersson won the East African Safari Rally recently it was only the second time in 23 years that the event had been won by a driver from outside East Africa. The other non-local winner was Hannu Mikkola, of Finland. in 1972. Behind Andersson and Arne Hertz’s Peugeot 504 came Sandro Munari-Lofty Drews (Italy and Kenya) in a Lancia Stratos — a similar car was third, and Andrew Cowan (Britain) in a Mitsubishi Colt was fourth, and the first driver of a Japanese car. A Peugeot was fifth, then Japanese cars filled the next five places. Fourteen of the 79 starters finished. §
An Alfa Romeo Alfetta, driven by the Australian drivers Evan Green and John Bryson, will be among the entrants in this year’s Heatway Rally. The Alfetta has a 1779 c.c. 140 b.h.p. engine and a fivespeed gearbox.
A major British economy run has been won by a "Hillman Imp with a consumption of 54.3 miles a gallon (5.22 litres a 100 km). A Citroen 2 CV was second with 53.8 m.p.g. (5.27 litres a 100 km). The big-car class was won by a Triumph Dolomite with 39.7 m.p.g. (7.14 litres a 100 km).
