When the Swedish driver Ove Andersson won the East African Safari Rally recently it was only the second time in 23 years that the event had been won by a driver from outside East Africa. The other non-local winner was Hannu Mikkola, of Finland. in 1972. Behind Andersson and Arne Hertz’s Peugeot 504 came Sandro Munari-Lofty Drews (Italy and Kenya) in a Lancia Stratos — a similar car was third, and Andrew Cowan (Britain) in a Mitsubishi Colt was fourth, and the first driver of a Japanese car. A major British economy run has been won by a "Hillman Imp with a consumption of 54.3 miles a gallon (5.22 litres a 100 km). A Citroen 2 CV was second with 53.8 m.p.g. (5.27 litres a 100 km). The big-car class was won by a Triumph Dolomite with 39.7 m.p.g. (7.14 litres a 100 km).
