Four measures were introduced by the Government and one by Mr R. L. G. Talbot (Nat., South Canterbury). All were read a first time. Thev were the Reserve Bank of New Zealand Amendment Bill, the Friendly Societies Amendment Bill, the Sale of Liquor Amendment Bill, the Civil Defence Amendment Bill and the Waitaki Lakes Recreation Area Bill. An Opposition attempt to have the bank measure referred to the Statutes Revision Committee was defeated, 30-45. The Civil Defence measure was referred to the Local Bills Committee for open hearings.
A petition asking for the protection of Manakau Harbour was received. The annua! reports of the Patriotic Fund Board, the Canteen Board and the Export Guarantee Office were tabled. Ministers,answered 14 questions.
