Better late . . .

A disaster for the Marlborough Racing Club was averted by the seamen’s decision to continue manning the Cook Strait ferries.

Yesterday morning 90 North Island horses awaited shipment at the Wellington Ferry Terminal. They were bound for Blenheim. But a stop-work meeting, called by the seamen’s union because of the Karepo dispute, might well have meant no further sailings between Wellington and Picton.

The seamen’s meeting extended beyond the iriginal sailing time of 9.20 a.m„ but the horses were eventually shipped to Picton later in the day. The club’s secretary (Mr Graeme Fuller) said late yesterday afternoon that all of the horses scheduled to be shipped on yesterday’s sailings would be in Picton by 6 p.m. Altogether North Island stables will provide almost 50 per cent of the horses racing at Blenheim. Beside yesterdav’s shinments there are a further 20 horses due to he shinned from Wellington today.
