Lake may be cleared

The Christchurch City Council will undertake dragline clearance of Horses’hoe Lake if it accepts a recommendation from its Parks and Recreation Committee. The work is expected to cost $12,000 and be completed before winter.

It is expected to greatly improve the drainage of properties in the vicinity of Dudley Creek. The removal of some trees and undergroyvth would cause temporary disfigurement of the banks, but this would be followed immediately by a programme to restore the natural “wilderness” ecology, the committee recommended.

The Christchurch Drainage Board has offered to hire a dragline to the department at an hourly rate of $5. The charge was lowered from $ll when the board realised that the dragline would remove some silt from the wateryvay.
