Double for Tillman
The Christchurch Boys’ High School pupil, Stephen Tillman, won the epee and sabre events In the Canterbury open fencing championships at Avonslde Girls' High School. The clash in the epee between Tillman and David Eccleston (Nelson) saw some spectacular fencing. The national men’s foil champion, Stephen Clarke (Otago) could only manage third place in that event, won by Eccleston For the first time, women were allowed to fence against men in the championships, but only in the foil. Moves are afoot to allow them in epee competition The most successful women were Linda Harris (Canterbun-, and Aileen Eccleston (Nelson). Results were:— Foil.—Eccleston 1. R. Clark (Canterbury) 2, S. Clarke 3, Tillman 4. G. Harris (Canterbury) 5, D. Dobbie (Canterbury) 6. Epee.—Tillman 1. Eccleston 2, S. Clarke 3. J. Lamb (Canterbury) 4. Dobbie 5, A. Greenland (Canterbury) 6. Sabre.—Tillman 1, Dobbie 2. Harris 3. O. Phan (Canterbury) 4. B. Swall (Canterbury) 5, L. Spackman (Canterbury) 6
