Swim club trip not favoured

No encouragement will be given by the Canterbury centre to the Greymouth Amateur Swimming Club for a tour to Australia.

The centre’s management committee heard a request from Greymouth for approval for such a trip—organisation and fundraising are already well under way—and for information about the correct procedures. Members generally did not favour any approval. ’’There is a certain risk in our, or others’ clubs, negotiating with Australia.” said Miss D. Brown.

The president of the centre (Mr D. Truscott) said any team which went to Australia would be “recognised as a New Zealand team,’’ and the secretary (Mr D. P. Johnson) said “we have already had it in reverse with Newcastle — a dreadful lot.”

After Mr C. P. Rowe had expressed his disagreement with the proposed trip — and pointed out that Greymouth swimmers “made virtually no Impact at the Canterbury championships” — Miss Brown said she felt “we must indicate we don’t favour holiday trips.” Greymouth will be asked for supporting information of the calibre of Its swimmers before approval of any sort is entertained.

The Inter-centre carnival to be held tn Canterbury on May 11 will be at Wharenui. When it was mentioned that the 100-mlle swim for world championships’ funds — the brainchild of Mark Trailers — would start on May 9, Mr Truscott commented "it will be the first time they have had a 12 hour warm-up.” The Canterbury 800 m freestyle championship will be on Wednesday, April 2, at Queen Elizabeth II Park
