Support for radials
(N.Z. Press Association) . WELLINGTON, Mar. 28. The Minister of EnergyResources (Mr Freer) has, strongly commended the use of radial tyres as a fuel conservation measure. Overseas experience had shown that these tyres could cut fuel consumption by be tween 2 and 10 per cent, he said in a statement. Although they cost more than standard tyres their longer life should compensate. More than 40 per cent of new car tyre produc-i tion was now in radials and he hoped this would increase. “An average 6 per cent reduction in fuel consumption would save the average motorist $l4 a year which represents an annual saving to the country of up to 11 million gallons of petrol! worth $4.5 million in overseas funds,” Mr Freer said.
