Late bus service

Sir, — Anxious to play our part in saving petrol, and reducing air pollution, Iwe always travel by , bus ! when possible. Unfortunately, our evening outings are frequently to concerts, which usually finish soon after 10 p.m. This leaves 40 minutes to wait for a bus to return, the alternatives being a taxi, if one is available, or a walk of two miles and a half. Can you be surprised that we usually decide that the car is “necessary”? — a conclusion that has probably been reached by several hundred other would-be patriots. I realise that the 10.20 service was probably cancelled for lack of patronage. but does the Transport Board not feel that a reintroduction is worth a trial? — Yours etc., COMMUTER. | March 12, 1975.

[Mr M. G. Taylor, general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board, replies: “In December 1972. the 10.20 p.m. trips from the Square on other than principal services were withdrawn because of the negligible patronage. The

10.40 p.m. trips were provided on almost all services as a compromise that fitted the majority, but obviously not all, functions being run round the centre of the city. Unless the board could have some assurance that patronage would be substantially better were such 10.20 p.m. services to be reintroduced, I do not think it would be prepared to reverse its 1972 decision.”]
