Power prices

Sir, — It is entirely misleading for Dr Keey to suggest that diversity is not relevant for incremental power. This may be excusable if it is not his field of knowledge. I suppose by this he means the amount extra each year caused by new houses, new industries and other growth mechanisms. Any supply system manager anywhere in the world will confirm that if diversity did not apply, his supply system would be overloaded. Sales figures for electric heaters in New Zealand would indicate that our system too would fail completely if they were all used at once. Perhaps theoretically they should be but practically they are not, and cannot be, (the system capacity is not enough to supply them. No responsible engineer would purchase five to seven times the equipment he needs in case of such an eventuality. — Yours, etc., ELECTRICIAN. March 26. 1975.
