Student bursaries

Sir, — I am a full-time student, living at home. I do not need $20.50 a week because like all other students I work for three months I during the summer holidays, ■ and like most other students j I can save enough to get [through the year. Married ‘ couples, and boarding stu- ; dents whose parents live out jof town, are the only ones! [who require a substantial! ; bursary increase. Anyone! else who claims to be in' trouble can either sell a car! l or move back in with par"ents. Unfortunately, the; prospering Students’Association is urging its members! jto support an increase in I bursaries and many have!

taken on a “why not?” attitude. I think they need a few moral reminders: The proposed standard tertiary bursary system involves many millions of dollars — every dollar paid to a student will be taken away from someone else. Hospital patients and pensioners are but a few who are in genuine need, yet lack organisation and strength. — Yours etc.,
