Record fee for Sobig

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Sobig, the most successful New Zealand-bred sire in history, will resume stud duty next spring at the Santa Rosa Stud, near Palmerston North. He will stand at a record fee for a horse at public service in New Zealand. $4OOO. One of Sobig’s owners, Mr G. A. Mitchell, confirmed the horse had recovered from the injury which prevented his standing last spring. Sobig fractured his near hock last March and spent four months and a half in plaster. When the cast was removed, it was clear that the bone had knitted well, but Sobig’s owners gave him ample time to recuperate.

However, there will be a small crop of Sobig foais next spring. Sobig was given about a dozen test coverings in late spring and summer.

Not surprisingly, Sobig already has a full book for 1975. He will cover about 45 mares, most of them Santa Rosa matrons.

At 13 years he has six crops of racing age and his stakes winners include Think Big, Sobar. Kirrama, Corroboree, Reachfar, Rustler, Devante, Little Papoose, Gladman and Knee High.
