GIFT OF $200 FOR BAUER

A Christchurch veteran athlete, Mr W. Anderton, has given $2OO to the longdistance runner, Siefried Bauer, to help him meet expenses on his attempt to break the record from Bluff to Cape Reinga.

“I picked up ‘The Press’ and read about Bauer slogging into the wind and rain and being short of money for accommodation and meals,” Mr Anderton said. “Bauer must be going

through a tremendously tough time,” he said. “It is hard enough to run those great distances without having the extra worry of wondering how he is going to meet expenses.” Mr Anderton, a builder, telephoned the Sports Editor of “The Press” yesterday morning and said he would like to give the money to Bauer. The cheque was last evening handed over to “The Press,” which will forward it to Bauer through the “Come Alive” campaign organisation.

Strong headwinds and rain again slowed Bauer early yesterday on his run north from Bulls. However, he ran about 60 miles on the eleventh day of his attempt to break the record of 23 j days for the journey.

He ran through Marton about 6 a.m. and then had the help of a light southerly wind. He had a lunch stop at Hunterville, reached Mangaweka about 3 p.m., and set out for Taihape, where he planned to stop overnight. After his 78-mile run from Paekakariki to Bulls on Tuesday, Bauer is now three days ahead of the effort of the record-holder, Don Cameron, last year. He feels he can afford to relax his pace during the present upsetting weather.

One of his attendants. Mr G. K. McDonald, said yesterday: “He is in good shape. His weight is building up 1 with the help of vitamins and health foods, and he has only one small blister on a foot.” The real casualties in the record attempt are Bauer’s shoes — he has worn down six pairs already. They are being repaired along the route.
