Open fires
Sir, — The interest shown by local authority in pollution is worthy of notice. Once coal fires are banned, pollution in other directions will become very noticeable. Obviously there will be no pollution of our drinking water with fluorine and its accompanying caustic soda. Interestingly enough not so long ago a speaker at the Chamber of Commerce was reported as saying that the air of Christchurch was never so clear as when the bus drivers were on strike. So good-bye to diesel buses and petrol-driven motor-cars. Let us have more Hagley Parks and wide-open spaces where the silver birches are not asphyxiated by fumes. — Yours, etc., MUZZLED.
