Alan Pascoe, the English hurdler, won the 400 metres hurdles at the Victorian amateur athletics championships in a race that was a virtual replay of the event at the 1974 Commonwealth Games.
Officials had predicted that the Australian record of 49.35ec would be broken, but Pascoe clocked only 50.4 in hot and breezy conditions. The first four place-getters in the Games at Christchurch a year ago finished in the same order. Bruce Field (Australia), was second in 50.6 sec followed by Bill Cosckie and Fatwell Ki--maiyo (both Kenya).
