Meat dispute continues
Negotiations continued at Ashley Meat Exports, Ltd, yesterday in an effort to solve a dispute that closed the meat-processing plant at Kaiapoi for two days last week. After a three-hour meeting between the management, the staff, and the Canterbury Meat Workers’ Union, no progress was made. The dispute began after six female workers were dismissed from the plant. Workers claimed that the management was "deliberately discriminating against female labour.” The com-j pany described the allegation! as “totally absurd.” Work resumed at the plant on Friday, after the dismissal notices were withdrawn, so that talks could take place: The secretary of the union (Mr W. R. Cameron) said yesterday that the company would write an official letter to the union about the situation, and that the prospect of a solution seemed hopeful. All workers were still emi ployed at the works, said Mr Cameron.
