CLEAN AIR IN PAPARUA
The Paparua County Council has agreed to “take positive steps” to establish Clean Air Zones within the county. One of the steps will be the banning of open fires for heating in new urban dwellings from April 1, next year. The council, adopting a town planning committee report, which considered submissions by the county’s chief health inspector (Mr G. W. L. Fairhall), asked who was to pay for converting existing fireplaces to approved methods of heating.
“The Government should stipulate its policy on the question of the financial assistance it is prepared to offer,” the committee said. The council decided that the zones should apply only in urban areas of the county, and that industrial activity in the county be similarly “licensed” under provisions of the Clean Air Act.
