Torana beats rest in variety race

Doug Smith in a Torana saloon was the predictable winner of a race between a saloon, stock car, horse, cyclist and runner over 100 metres at Woodford Glen, near Kaiapoi, last evening. That was the finishing order I in the 3ZM flying free-for-all, watched by a crowd of about 2000. The meeting had been postponed from Saturday night because of bad weather. The, meeting the previous Saturday night also had to be cancelled. Apart from the free-for-all which, of course, was over almost as sqon as it began, the 'crowd was treated to a feast of; en'h»siastic stock car and saloon I racing. 0u.,.h had a good night, with! a first and a second in the ; saloon races as well as winning the sprint. Roy Granger pushed l him hard in his Cortina for the i 10 taps of the first A grade! saloon race but Smith held him' i out by swinging the tail of his I car wide on the corners. John Richards, of Ashburton,' appeared again for the first time! after severely damaging his Mustang in an argument with! the safety fence, and claimed; third. Kevin Baird won the next A grade race in his Escort, with] Smith second and Granger third.' These three cars circulated within a few feet of each other) i for the 10 laps, and stopped aj very determined Des Ward from barging through in his 1955 Chevrolet This was remarkably close and spectacular racing, with the lead changing at least once a lap. Gerald Griffiths drove particularly well to claim two firsts and . a second in the stock car events.
