Women teachers
Sir, — I am amazed at the unjust, sweeping statement, made by Mr B. T. O’Rourke, of the Christchurch Teachers’ College. How unfair he is to blame the failure of the three “R’s,” on the “predominance of women teachers.”. Young children require a woman teacher. A “baby” pupil often needs motherly encouragement or a cuddle, if disaster, such as a bad fall occurs. I fail to see a male teacher in this category. The fault lies in the poor system taught today. The three “R’s,” should be taught from early childhood, instead of when children are jin the standards. I agree that “most significant learning achievement is learnt i outside the classroom in practical situations.” One has merely to hear critii cisms by employers of spelling, punctuation, and matli- | ematical errors, by young I employees, who admittedly 'learn while they work. The
teaching system is wrong, not women teachers. — Yours etc., BETHUNE. March 1, 1975.
