Boxing’s big men clash
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) MELBOURNE. Sunday’s clash between the former world champion, Joe Frazier, and Jimmy Ellis is the first major heavy-weight boxing event to be held in Australia since 1908. The two Americans meet in the open-air arena at St Kilda. Not since Jack Johnson beat Tommy Bums for the world title in Sydney on Boxing Day, 1908, have world-rated big men of the ring clashed in Australia. The promoters, Global Productions of Seattle, have billed it as a heavy-weight title elimination bout — and dropped frequent hints that the champion, Muhammad Ali, might defend his crown in Australia.
