Development near airport
Sir, —It would be a great pity if restrictions were placed on the airport because of the shortsightedness of a local body. The Waimairi County Council appears to have acted irresponsibly, for although declining applications for rezoning rural land as required under its code of ordinances, no objections were registered when these applications were referred to the appeal board. Many overseas airports have been forced to restrict flights and impose restraints, because of public outcry. Enforced tight turns on take-off, to protect residential developments from excessive noise, have been the cause of accidents and have eroded pilot confidence. The approach to Christchurch Airport’s northwest runway, subject to gusty high winds, calls for skill and concentration. Highdensity housing occupying the flight path, almost to touchdown point, must disturb pilots. It is time for a reappraisal by local bodies and if necessary an enforceable Government policy to prevent further encroachment on airport safety zones.— Yours, etc., ASTRA. February 25, 1975.
