Speed skaters set for world titles
Speed roller skating trials will be held in Masterton on Saturday to select a team of up to four men to contest the world championships in Argentina from April 2 to 5. For as long as four years, plans have been made and scrapped as the championships have never eventuated. But confirmation was given by an American delegate at the last meeting of the international body that the championships would be held this year and the New Zealand federation has accepted this announcement as correct. The president, Mr H. A.
Allchurch (Christchurch), has called an executive meeting this week-end to approve selections and to appoint a team manager. Three of New Zealand’s top hank-track skaters, Gerry Glover (Wellington), Dean Hayes (Masterton), and Bill Begg (Christchurch), have all advised that they are not interested in qualifying for the team.
Both Hayes and Glover competed at the last world titles in Argentina in 1969. Hayes won two gold medals and was third in another event. Glover was second in the two sprints to G. Cantarella (Italy). Begg has been the only Christchurch competitor to extend Glover in sprint events.
