SECOND CHANNEL

Engineer’s warning (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 24. . Television viewers should not commit themselves to buying a new aerial until the strength of the signal from the second television channel could be assessed, the N.Z.B.C.’s chief engineer, Mr A. K. Richardson, said today. “Viewers may find that only some adjustment of their existing aerial is required to receive both channels satisfactorily,” he said. The second-channel transmission is due to begin in Auckland in July, and then, progressively, in Hamilton, Christchurch, Wellington, Palmerston North, Dunedin and Invercargill in the latter part of this year and early 1976. “The cost of a new aerial suitable for both channels may vary from $2O to $75 and, with installation costs to pay above this, it would be foolish for viewers to commit themselves to any of this expense before the secondchannel signal becomes available in their area and is evaluated,” Mr Richardson said.
