Abdullah back in power

(N Z. Press Assn—Copyright) NEW DELHI, Feb. 25.

A former Kashmiri Prime Minister (Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah) the “lion of Kashmir” who was once held in an Indian gaol for 11 years, was yesterday officially returned to power in the disputed State of Jammu and Kashmir by the Indian Government, Agence FrancePresse reported. The Prime Minister (Mrs Indira Gandhi) told the Lok Sabha (Lower House) of the Indian Parliament that the 69-year-old sheikh would be formally installed as Chief Minister of the State in Jammu this morning. The Congress Party ministry led by Mr Syed Mir Oasim has already resigned to make room for him. In his first reaction to the announcement, Sheikh Abdullah said that Kashmir’s accession to India was final and total. He added that there was no longer any need to hold a plebiscite in the State, for which his party, the Plebiscite Front, was originally formed.
