Sutch case
Sir, —You express the opinion that very many will be relieved by the acquittal of Dr Sutch. In my experience I venture to suggest your view is entirely at variance with the great bulk of responsible opinion. It is true to say that several of us have heard free expressions of opinion upon this case — without exception the many who have expressed views are greatly disturbed by the verdict given. They cannot understand how a man of intellect and experience with State departments found it necessary to deny consorting with representatives of a country which so obviously is waging a cold war. Why did he not, in making his statement, explain those strange and secret meetings? I can only add that the Prime Minister’s pleasure at his acquittal will be exceeded only by that of the Soviet.— Yours, etc., VIGILANT. February 24, 1975.
