Patrol craft to visit
The Royal New Zealand Navy's two new fast patrol craft Pukaki and Rotoiti will visit Lyttelton for the first time next month. Their visit will be part of a month-long maiden operational cruise round New Zealand. The two craft will arrive at 9 a.m. on March 27 for a five-day stay at the port. The Chief of the Naval Staff (Rear-Admiral E. C. Thome) said that the initial extensive cruise was designed to test thoroughly the operational capabilities of the patrol craft while at the same time allowing the public to see them.
The 107 ft craft, which were built in Britain, will visit 10 New Zealand ports. With their sister craft Hawea and Taupo, which are due to be delivered in April, they will be used on fishery protection work and resources duties round the coast.
