Union may lift live sheep ban

(N Z Press Association} DUNEDIN, Feb. 24. The annual conference of the Meat Worker’s Union in Dunedin today gave its management committee room to manoeuvre on the issue of live sheep exports to the Middle East. Previously the union opposed the export of live sheep, believing that all export meat should be processed by its members in New Zealand. The secretary (Mr F. E. Me. Nulty) said the union still fully supported the principle of all meat being processed before it was exported. “The union is concerned about the export of live sheep, and in principle opposes it,” he said. However, the conference had instructed the management committee to keep the position under review. Authority had also been given to the committee to relax the union’s ban should it consider that the export of live sheep would be beneficial to New Zealand’s meat industry, and the development of markets overseas.
