Wash-out in Westland downpour
A 70ft Bailey bridge span was prepared in Greymouth yesterday and rushed to South Westland to replace a washed-out bridge over Hende’s Creek, in the Weheka Hills.
The Haast Pass highway was not expected to be reopen before today. In addition to the bridge washout, slips and scouring have occurred in the Weheka Hills: area.
It was reported from the glacier region that 10 inches of rain had fallen overnight A culvert was partly scoured out at Chesterfield, south of Kumara Junction, and j Ministry of Works and 1 Development staff were repairing it in heavy rain 1 yesterday. I
