Aust, women cricketers draw with Canterbury

Rain had the main say in the outcome of the women’s cricket match between Australia and Canterbury which finished in a draw at Hagley Oval yesterday. Rain also restricted play on Sunday.

Although both captains made sporting declarations in the first innings, there was little chance of a victory.

After batting for three overs and failing to add to its overnight score of 77 for three, Australia declared at that score when rain intervened for the first time. Canterbury had to struggle as hard for runs as Australia had, and the captain, Pat Carrick, kept interest alive when she declared at 54 for three, off 39 overs. Ann McKenna, one of the openers, was unbeaten on 23 at the declaration, and, although it was a sound in-

nings, she was not able to wrest the initiative from the Australian bowlers.

Although the Canterbury bowling did not reach great heights in the second innings, the tourists were unable to score with freedom. Jackie ?otter and Margaret Jennings added 36 for the first wicket, but they treated many over-tossea balls very circumspectly. Karen Price and the captain, Wendy Blunsden, both made useful scores for Australia, but were not dominant figures either. -

Sue Rattray, supported by excellent wicket-keeping by Margaret Alabaster, took four wickets for 39 off 15 overs, but she bowled many loose deliveries, and her figures were flattering.

As Australia prolonged its declaration, Carrick introduced her medium-pace bowlers, Vicki McGregor and Kay Gilray, into the attack and both gave the batsmen cause for concern. Australia declared when rain forced the players from the field at 5 p.m., but it is doubtful whether Canterbury would have attempted to chase the 123 runs needed Ifor victory in 80 minutes.
