More seminars on coaching likely
The Canterbury Rugby Union is almost certain to look at further residential coaching schools at Lincoln College after the suecess of the school it held there for local club coaches at the w eek-end.
The president of the union (Mr C. H. J. Rhodes) said yesterday that the format adopted was successful. Schools might be held for promising young players—even leading players—or coaches from lower grades, said Mr Rhodes. Lincoln College was idea! for live-in seminars, and the union was well off in the range and calibre of instructors available. The school at the weekend was attended by about 90 coaches, some in charge of senior teams.
Both Mr Rhodes and the course director, Dr J. D. Stewart, believe that the objectives were met. The course director (Dr J. D. Stewart) said the participants seemed to benefit, learning about both the role of a coach and the technical aspects of passing on knowledge.
Scrummaging, a subject close to Dr Stewart’s heart, was one subject about which the coaches had learnt a great amount, he said. The chairman of the AU Black selection panel (Mr J. J. Stewart) made a worthwhile contribution to a dis. cussion of the trends in Rugby.
Another visitor was Mr I. M. H. Vodanovich, the chairman of the New Zealand union's coaching committee, and, according to Mr Rhodes he left very impressed by what he had seen and heard and by how far the Canter bury union was ahead of th: rest of the country in coach ing.
