Hercules go home
The United States Navy’s three ski-equipped Hercules, their support job in the Antarctic over for the summer, left Christchurch for their base in California in the early hours of Sunday morning. Just north of Auckland one of the aircraft gave an indicator light in the cockpit suggesting overheating of one ' engine so it was switched off. Barely 10 minutes later the other engine, also on the same side, appeared to suffer from the same problem and it too was switched off. The twp-engined Hercules was then turned round to head back to Christchurch but instead touched down at the R.N.Z.A.F. base at Ohakea.
A New Zealand Hercules on its way to Christchurch was asked to pick up spares at Christchurch which would rectify the problem but later the United States Navy received information that the fault had been fixed at Ohakea. The Hercules finally got airborne for Pago Pago at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday. All three reached their home base yesterday.
Rugby.— A second half rally gave the Wainuiomata Rugby team the second win of its American tour, at Vancouver. After trailing, 7-15, against the Vancouver Ravens, Wainuiomata won, 19-18.
