Extension rejected

A plan to extend the science library at the University of Canterbury has jeen rejected by the University Grants Committee. The vice-chanceilor of the University of Canterbury (Professor N. C. Phillips) told; a meeting of the university; council yesterday that the re-j jection made the provision of | a new building for the law faculty more urgent. Increased pressure would; be placed on the James Hight I library-arts building because the science library could not, be extended and planning must begin for a combined law department and law library.

Professor Phillips said that preliminary planning was now underway for a creche. This would be designed so that it could eventually be of two storeys.

A request to the UniversityGrants Committee for $344,000 to furnish the new arts faculty buildings was reduced to a grant of $278,000.
