Pigs and garlic and spare parts

Salmon, coconuts, scallops, three pigs, and two deer were among the lastminute fare taken to the Antarctic on Wednesday night by two United States Navy Hercules on the last

flights south from Christchurch this summer. In the last week the Navy supply staff asked the men who will spend the winter at McMurdo Station if they required anything special in the food line and as a result the aircraft carried: 1200 doz. eggs, 2000 gallons r." milk, grapefruit and tangerines, some trout, garlic, cabbages, lettuces, yoghurt, and even Japanese sweet rice, which had to be delivered from Auckland. FresJi foods were also bound for Scott Base, including 601 b of fresh tomatoes because tinned tomatoes were unprocurable.

Spare parts for one of the two generators, which broke down last week, were also carried for Scott Base. Some of these arrived yesterday from Australia just in time for the flight south. In the meantime the faulty generator has had temporary repairs with parts provided by the U.S. Navy from a generator from the old South Pole Station.
