Record-breaking cycle ride by Sword
1 The cold winds and persistent ; threat—sometimes an actuality—of rain, meant little at Denton Park last evening, and the Cani terbury cycling team could not have had a greater fillip for the national championships. I Gary Sword, taken aU the way by the impressive Jacob Schriek, I set a national record for a kilometre handicap race won by a 'scratch rider. His time of 69.9 sec—the same as the fastest kilometre (Standing start) raced in New Zealand—beat Schriek’s time set two weeks ago by O.Ssec. But Schriek was to participate In his own record, on the tandem with Lester Vette. They covered the last 200 m in Usee, breaking by o.2sec tire record set by Ray Knight and Schriek a year ago. Schriek later had a flying 400 m time trial, but his 25.75ec was well short of his own record. To complete the series of good times, two novices got into the; picture. Paul Flattery won the; 1600 m station pursuit in 2mln; 13.1 sec, second only to Joe Sulll- > van, four years ago, since the I event started.
And Jim Tabak won the kilometre in Imin 15.9 sec, another very creditable time. It was a very depleted field which finished the 8000 m finale, and three members of the pursuit team—Bruce Ramsay, Paul Jesson and Errol Barkerfinished well clear of the rest.
