(N.Z. Press Association» WESTPORT, Feb. 21. A Westport driver returning from Christchurch this week was booked for speeding by a traffic officer in a mufti patrol car whose rear window carried a large cigarette-advertising sign. The Westport man said today he was told by the patrolman that a number of enterprising officers used similar decoys when patrolling in plain cars. Some even put roof racks and surf boards on their cars. The chief traffic officer for Christchurch (Mr E. E. Dunlop) said today that such tactics were not permitted by the Ministry of Transport. “We don’t approve of this, but some of the boys get carried away.”
The episode was enough to put him off smoking for life, the Westport driver said.
