New boss still bemused
The Canterbury Rugty team’s new “boss,” Mr S. F. Hill, returned to Christchurch from Waiouru last evening still a little bemused by his election as convener of the provincial selection panel. He did not learn of his new role in Rugby until his wife telephoned him on Thursday. “I was more or less talked into accepting nomination, and the news of my election came as a surprise,” he said. “I didn’t expect to be chosen with so many in the field.” IMr Hill said he had not given much thought to the task in hand. “But I see nd problems at present. I am happy to be teamed with Derek Arnold — we should get on well together.” An outstanding international second row forward in the 19505, Mr Hill said his ideas on Rugby had not changed much In the intervening years. “Generally, my aim is to have forwards and backs working in harmony to put points on the board.” Asked if he placed winning Rugby ahead of entertaining Rugby, he replied: “No-one likes you if you don’t win.” Mr Hill said it was too early for him to forecast if there would be any changes in the Canterbury team. Military duties prevented him from seeing much of the side last season. “But I believe Canterbury has the ability to succeed and I think we should bring it out this year,” he added.
