Dog-owners reassured
The Canterbury hydatids field advisory officer (Mr J. J. Russell) spent a large part of Thursday on the telephone reassuring anxious dogowners that their dogs were not endangered by taenia ovis (sheep measles) through being fed beef. This task was brought about because an article in “The Press” yesterday, headed “Move to dose, city dogs six-weekly” said that sheep and cattle could contract taenia ovis. Cattle cannot contract the infection. Its hosts, apart from dogs, are limited to sheep and goats, as far as the National Hydatids Council is aware. Owners who have fed their dogs beef need have no fear, Mr Russell said yesterday.
