MAGISTRATE'S COURT Woman persuaded escaped prisoner to return

Mr F. G. Paterson, 5.M.,1 commended yesterday a woman who helped talk an escaper into returning to! prison after he had called at her house and had threatened her with his fist. The escaper, Lawrence Te’ Iwi Toa Kanohi. aged 20 (Mr P. G Benseman), appeared in the Magistrate’s Court for sentence on charges of escaping from Paparua Prison: and of assaulting the) woman, Rachel Johnson; Allcock, on November 25 He had previously pleaded g"ilty. Kanohi had his prison: term extended by a total off four months — three) months on the escaping charge and one on the charge of assault. The Court had earlier been' told that Kanohi had been sent to the prison’s piggeries but went to Mrs Allcock’s, house instead. She lives! about a mile from the pris-i on. Kanohi asked for a drink; and was given one. When; she eventually asked him to! leave, he had slammed the front door, grabbed her, and: raised his fists. He asked to be driven into! Christchurch but got out of; the car near the prison and returned across the pad-1 docks. Mr Benseman submitted! that Kanohi was “frustrated” at the time and on the spur of the moment had de-! cided to escape. He had returned voluntarily, however,! when persuaded by Mrs Allcock. “It says much for her that! she was able to persuade you to return,” the Magis-i trate told Kanohi. “CONSTANT OFFENDING” “Your constant offending has to stop or you will be put away from the community for longer and longer periods,” said the Magistrate when sentencing Brent Ro y Coulston, aged 18, on two charges of burglary. Coulston (Mr G. M. Brodie) pleaded guilty to burgling the premises of Keystore Wholesale Groceries (N.Z.), Ltd, and a building shed on Ferry Road on January 29. He was sentenced to im-| prisonment for nine months, to be followed by probation; on the conditions that he* live and work where direct-; ed and not associate With! persons not approved of by! the probation officer.
